Our History
Legally Accurate started as a dinner discussion about the gap between legal theory and legal practice regarding firearm laws, both in the understanding and application of defense and prosecution. Law schools graduating thousands of newly minted litigators every year with limited (if any) knowledge pertaining to basic firearm legal issues, coupled with an ever changing legislative and technological landscape and absence of educational resources to draw from would drive that gap wider each passing year.
The great Sam Rayburn of Texas was once quoted as saying, “Any jackass can kick a barn down, but it takes a carpenter to build one”. We concluded that we could build something different and redefine the way legal education could be delivered.
In 2013, we hosted our first firearm themed continuing legal education event and nearly violated fire code with our oversold audience. We learned that there were many others out there that found it fascinating to discuss firearm law, explore legal defenses and lawful use of deadly force, and that often those discussions simply needed a place and a moderator to guide discussion.
Ever since our first event, our attendees have included patent attorneys, personal injury specialists, family and marital law attorneys, public defenders, criminal defense attorneys, state prosecutors, sitting judges, and federal public defenders. Our attendance has also included people outside the legal profession that just wanted to see how we explore and analyze firearm laws. We are constantly amazed at the number of open minds who are willing to explore a politically sensitive topic in a classroom environment.
Our team saw a need - attorneys with varying amounts of experience that lack a practical education on firearms and the law surrounding them that keeps them from providing the best legal advice possible. Whether you are defending a criminal act, advocating for a violation of parole, dividing marital assets, or drafting an estate plan - our programs will benefit your practice of law.
